Maintain A Safe (Or Greater Than) Following Distance
Avoid driving so close behind another vehicle that you are forced to *immediately* brake if it begins slowing down. Important at all times, but particularly in sub/urban driving where traffic changes speed more often.
Leave enough space that you have time to choose other options (perhaps a lane change).
In addition, the greater your following distance, the [...]

Use A Block Heater To Warm Up Your Engine Before Driving
Pre-warm your engine with an electric block heater. Engines are most efficient at full operating temperature, and the block heater helps it get there sooner. About 2 hours is the maximum time needed to pre-warm a small engine.

Hypermiling: Pulse And Glide, The Best MPG Tactic
It sounds like some kind of tactical maneuver from the starship Enterprise. But in fact, it’s a driving technique for more Earthly transportation. (Never mind that the car most closely associated with the term is kind of spacy-looking.)
Of course the car in question is the Prius, and this summer, a group of five efficiency aficionados [...]

In Adverse Weather, Follow The Leader
In weather conditions that leave a lot of precipitation on the road - heavy rain or snow - drive in the tiretracks of the vehicle in front to reduce rolling resistance.
An exception to this tip may be on “rutted” surfaces where water tends to pool in the ruts. In that case, driving on the [...]

Conserve Momentum, Brake Hard
It sounds like a contradiction, but there are rare times when braking hard can save fuel compared to coasting or light braking: it’s a “damage control” technique when faced with an unpredictable/unanticipated stop or slow down ahead and not a lot of space.
An example: approaching a fresh red traffic light that had no other indicators [...]

DIY Lexan Headlight Cover For Increased MPG
I made some Lexan headlight covers and am going to tell how to do it. These will help FE for us with the older style “bucket” headlights, with a lower cost than replacement composite headlights.
You will first have to make a template of your surround. I used poster board and made the template by laying [...]

Driving With Daytime Running Lights Off To Save Gas
Although the balance between fuel economy and safety should always be examined, in some situations it makes no difference. If you’re on a divided highway on a sunny day I don’t think you need to worry about your running lights. Some vehicles use as much as 100 watts of electricity to power these bad boys, [...]

Gas Saving Products - What’s Your Experience?
Having spent the last couple years running what I would like to think is a semi-successful site dedicated to fuel economy, I have received a ton of emails from individuals and businesses asking me to shill their “revolutionary” gas saving products.
Some ask if I will write about their product for free, while others offer [...]

Avoid Excessive Idling
A few good ways to avoid excessive idling are your shopping stops. Don’t sacrifice fuel for convenience. Drive through banks, atms, fast food, etc. all lead to wasted gas. Get out of your car, its really not that difficult. When you’re going to get gas try to do it at off peak times, waiting in [...]
