Have a Carburetor? Try Fuel Atomization
Back in the days when carburetors were used to feed gasoline into the engine, there were a couple of tricks that could improve fuel economy a bit, especially when the engine was cold. One was a simple honeycomb spacer that fit under the carburetor. The turbulence created by the honeycomb helped break up the [...]

Carpool and Save Big
We all know that the absolute best way to save gas is to drive less, but everyone has to get to work. You may not know anyone to carpool with but I guarantee there is someone in your area and a number of ways to carpool. Everything from shared money for gas to rotating turns [...]

Colder Weather, Think Smart
Use a block heater, this will allow your engine to be closer to a good running temp without having to waste a lot of gas starting your car in the morning.
Letting the car warm up before driving moves you to the right on this chart. You never make up the fuel burned. Less engine run [...]

The DIY $672 Electric Geo Metro
What do you get when you cross a Geo Metro with an electric forklift, a golf cart, and a bunch of used batteries? You get a ridiculously inexpensive, home-built, street-legal electric car.
This battery powered grocery getter was built by Darin Cosgrove and Ivan Limburg, of Brockville, Ontario. The friends were looking for a project to [...]

Unsafe Hypermiling Techniques
Turning the engine off while coasting can, in some cars, leave the driver without power steering or brakes and allow the possibility that the steering wheel will lock up. Drivers can endanger themselves and others if they go too slow for the pace of traffic.
How about that urge to “draft” trucks — follow close behind [...]

Think Ahead, Pick up High and Deliver Low
If possible, shop at stores that are higher in elevation than your home. That way the extra weight you pick up (shopping items) is on board for the descending return leg where it’s less of a penalty than it would be on an ascending return leg.

Use EZ Pass For Toll Roads and Bridges
Especially handy for high-speed toll passes, because it avoids the slow down and acceleration back up to speed. Generally useful anywhere it will help you avoid the stop-and-go/idling in lines approaching the tool booth.

Without Clean Electricity Plug-In Electric Vehicles Not So Hot
something I (and a lot of other people) have been wondering about for a while in regards to plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs, like the Chevy Volt) and pure electric vehicles (EVs, like the Lightning GT and Subaru R1e). PHEVs are not a new thing, and they have been discussed on Gas2.0 before, but there is [...]

Interesting EcoDriving (Hypermiling) Studies
Here are a few interesting studies and presentations on eco-driving, or hypermiling, and their effect not only on personal gas mileage but on emissions as well:
The first one is a 1999 Swedish pre-study called “Impact of EcoDriving on emissions and fuel consumption“. Most interesting are the before/after learning in chapter 3 : slow down, acceleration, [...]

LRR (Low Rolling Resistance) Tires - Stats & Options
For those considering replacing their tires with a LRR versions, this report is a good place to start for general info. It’s getting long in the tooth (1993), but the basics still apply.
1.5 to 4.5% of total gasoline use could be saved if all replacement tires in use had low rolling resistance
About 237 million replacement [...]
