Warm Up In The Winter

Written on November 8, 2008. Written by Zac.

If you insist on going the cheap route and not putting in a block heater, don’t waste too much gas on warm up. I only warm mine up enough to get the oil pressure up (I have a gauge) and till any oil starved parts like lifters quiet down. Usually 1/2 minute when its cold. [...]

5th Generation Civic Hatchback - Aerodynamic Modded

Written on November 6, 2008. Written by Zac.

So now I am setting out on the road of improving the aerodynamics of a 5th generation Honda Civic hatchback.
Goals are as follows:
1.) Improve aerodynamics from Cd: 0.32 to Cd: 0.26 or better (Honda Insight equivalent)

Winter Cold: Start & Idling Warm-up Experiment

Written on November 5, 2008. Written by Zac.

I did a mini experiment to chart the relationship between coolant temp, intake air temp (warm air intake in place) and fuel consumption in Litres per hour according to the ScanGauge.
The test conditions:

ambient: -7 C / 19 F
cold soak (hadn’t driven it since the day before)
all electrical accessories off
WAI in place
didn’t touch the accelerator [...]

Winter - Park In Your Garage

Written on November 4, 2008. Written by Zac.

Allowing your engine to operate at a warmer temperature greatly increases fuel economy.
If you have one, clean out your garage so you can park your car inside during the cold months of the year. The faster warm up will return better fuel economy.
The only potential downside is that it may increase the rate of corrosion [...]

DIY Fuel Injector Kill Switch For 2005 Scion xB

Written on November 3, 2008. Written by Zac.

This obvious point of this modification is to allow you to cut off fuel, thus killing the engine very quickly. This is for advanced hypermilers and allows you to conserve a lot of fuel by avoiding idling altogether.
This is how I added a fuel injector kill switch to my ‘05 Scion xB.
The kill switch works [...]

DIY How To: Install A Block Heater

Written on November 2, 2008. Written by Zac.

The example here is on a Geo Metro, you should be able to take these instructions and apply it to your own vehicle. For cold weather there’s nothing like allowing your engine to be hot without wasting gas letting it run to achieve a lot more MPG.
I picked up a Kat’s 850watt block heater today. [...]

DIY 100 MPG Car Back On Road After 20 Years

Written on November 1, 2008. Written by Zac.

Through the forums I learned about the interesting story of a two men who built a super-efficient car back in 1984 to combat high gas prices, only to pull it off the road again when prices became more manageable. The two, Craig Henderson and Bill Green, founded Avion in 1984 and then spent two years [...]
