Honda Accord Vacuum Gauge Install

Written on January 21, 2009. Written by Zac.

I had 10 spare minutes last night and access to a warm warehouse, so I drove my Accord up the ramp and inside to do a quick jury-rigged install of my vacuum gauge. I used the Auto Gage 2 1/16″ gauge. I prefer the full-sweep motion, and I never plan to turbocharge the car, so [...]

Don’t Waste Your Momentum - On A Hill Before A Red Light

Written on November 20, 2008. Written by Zac.

When facing a red traffic light, or some other predictable stop/start situation at the bottom of a hill, you’re better off stopping near the top before you’ve accelerated to full speed. Wait, and time your release to make it through on green, and you avoid turning your potential energy into brake dust and heat. (Also [...]

DIY - Replace Stock Thermostat For Better Fuel Economy

Written on November 14, 2008. Written by Zac.

Replacing the thermostat is one of the easiest, cheapest, and most imperceptible ways to increase fuel economy. Stock thermostats, which generally open at around 180 degrees, are a compromise between performance and fuel economy. If you’re treating your engine kindly you can get away with installing a 195 degree thermostat in order to push your [...]

Use The Right Tire Size For Maximum Fuel Efficiency

Written on November 12, 2008. Written by Zac.

Most vehicles on the road have 3-4 different size tires (at least) that will run perfectly fine. This is especially true with trucks ans SUVs. As a general rule the smaller size tire will allow you to get more MPG, and usually a tire with a less nobby tread will do the same (you may [...]

Winter - Park In Your Garage

Written on November 4, 2008. Written by Zac.

Allowing your engine to operate at a warmer temperature greatly increases fuel economy.
If you have one, clean out your garage so you can park your car inside during the cold months of the year. The faster warm up will return better fuel economy.
The only potential downside is that it may increase the rate of corrosion [...]

Colder Weather, Think Smart

Written on October 29, 2008. Written by Zac.

Use a block heater, this will allow your engine to be closer to a good running temp without having to waste a lot of gas starting your car in the morning.
Letting the car warm up before driving moves you to the right on this chart. You never make up the fuel burned. Less engine run [...]

Think Ahead, Pick up High and Deliver Low

Written on October 24, 2008. Written by Zac.
