Know Your Gas Mileage
The most important thing in increasing your miles per gallon is to know your gas mileage. Know what you are getting for every tank, especially if you drive the same routes daily. This will give you a better concept of what new hypermiling techniques give you a significant MPG boost, and which don’t. Its also a great motivator when you see that you’re getting 10 MPG more than last week!
There’s a couple ways to go about this. Newer cars, of course, often come with gas mileage displays; however it should be noted that these don’t provide you with averages for your whole tank, often, and are somewhat inaccurate. You can go the free method, record how many gallons you put in and what mileage you’re at, then do the simple math at your next fillup. You may also go the semi cheap way and build a DIY MPG guage, or go the expensive way and buy a gas mileage guage (if you do this be sure to check eBay, they’re often about 30% cheaper there as a lot of people buy them but never do the install).
Be sure to know your gas mileage. After all, how can you improve what you don’t know?
